Word got out about the attack on Kenabres, and the Mendevian army is on its way, but rumors abound that Nerosyan and other cities along the border are facing their own plights. So far, the Eagle Watch is relatively certain that none of the other border cities have suffered as great a defeat as Kenabres, but they can confirm that this city’s Wardstone has been destroyed and that as a result, the entire network of Wardstones has diminished in power to a shadow of its former strength.
As horrific as recent events have been, we’ve come to realize that they are, in fact, merely a prelude. The assault on the city was nothing more than opening gambits. The Worldwound is on the march in a more concentrated assault than we’ve seen since the fall of Drezen. The end of this hundred-year-war is upon us, and it falls to us to ensure victory.
The Templars of the Ivory Labyrinth were scattered, those who serve Deskari, Lord of the Locust Host, remain concentrated in Old Kenabres. What we’ve heard from within is ominous. The cultists are waiting for the vile witch Areelu Vorlesh to arrive and take possession of Kenabres.
When the Wardstone was destroyed, it exploded and destroyed the Kite. The network along the border failed, but did not fade completely. We believe this is because a significant portion of our wardstone still exists, and that the cultists have taken it to the old garrison in Old Kenabres. From what we’ve learned, they’re hoping to engineer a way to somehow reverse the field generated by the Wardstones – essentially, to use our own greatest defense as a devastating weapon.
The attack on Kenabres had a predictable result: causing the crusade to gather at the border to defend it. I believe that Areelu was counting on the massing along the border, and that if she can corrupt the Wardstone field, she can strike a devastating blow against us all. In effect, we’ve lined up for the slaughter.
Vorlesh is surely seeking some object of great Abyssal power, likely the Nahyndrian crystal mentioned in the missive you recovered, and with it she intends to turn the source of our hope into an unimaginable nightmare. We cannot hope to evacuate everyone from the border – I doubt they would give up the defensive line even if they knew what the enemy planned.
But we can still stop this from happening – we just need to have someone infiltrate the Gray Garrison, locate the wardstone fragment. Removing it out of the city and away from the borders will cause the rest of the Wardstones network to fail completely, and bringing it to Defender’s Heart will only bring an assault on this tavern which we will never manage to survive, let alone if Vorlesh is leading it. Therefore, the best course of action will be to destroy the last fragment of the Wardstone.
It is this task that the committee hopes you will take upon yourselves, Orion, Zeldir and Brant. All of Kenabres’s greatest defenders perished, fled, or were captured – this final task falls to those few who remain, and of them, you are the best situated to take on the mission. Irabeth and the other surviving mercenaries will go on the offensive throughout the city. They will have to abandon our defensive position and will certainly take losses, but luring the cultists now in control of Old Kenabres out to attack a few uprisings of crusaders will certainly give you the advantage you need to attack the Gray Garrison..
Background events and stories
Yaniel de Garess – As Brant walks into the room, Caelda stands up and looks at him as if shes seeing a ghost. Apparently, Caelda was one of the crusaders whom Yaniel saved in the Worldwound, and the two became friends for the short period of time before Yaniel was killed. As Brant learns from her, Yaniel looked quite like him – a blonde Suli with yellow eyes. According to Caelda, while the Suli men of de Garess family were glorified, the females were hidden in shame. Yaniel left her family in Bravoy for that exact reason and ended up a Paladin in Kenabres.
Riftwarden Stashes – Quendys has one other mean that will help your effort to infiltrate the Gray Garrison. Every Riftwarden has a hidden stash of weapons and magical aids kept secret exactly for days of wow like these ones. Unfortunately his stash is hidden inside the Gray Garrison, but if you manage to get into the building, it might serve its purpose. Among the items hidden there is a Rod of Cancellation that will surly come in handy when and if you find the Wardstone. Quendys furnishes you with a sketch map he drew for the Gray Garrison with the stash location marked.
Aravashnial also has a stash hidden somewhere in the city, and if you wish to do so, you can go and collect it tomorrow.
1000gp – Horgus Gwerm bursts in. Although he is unhappy about being called for the meeting, or being drawn into this all Good vs. Evil nonsense, he does place a 1000gp on the table “for anyone who might need it”.
